Various Types Of Dog Breeds

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) there are more than 150 dog breeds, each having their own unique characteristics. There are also a large variety of mixed dog breeds, every one of them is available in different sizes, shapes and personality traits. You can learn about what particular breed is right for you if you have the basic knowledge about different dog breeds.

Sporting Breeds

Dogs in this category of breeds have qualities and instincts that make them especially suited for participating in sporting activities. Some popular breeds in this category are retrievers, setters, spaniels and pointers.  These dogs are well aware of their surroundings, they will often remain on watch under your command and are ready for action in water and forested areas.  Note that these types of high spirited dogs requires regular exercise for optimum health.

Hound Breeds

Most hound dogs share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as baying.  Examples of hound dogs are Pharaoh Hounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Irish Wolfhound, Afghans and Beagles, among others.

Working Breeds

These large and strong dogs can work and gain their keep by performing tasks such as guarding property and people, pulling sleds and performing snow and water rescues, they have a history of working with man in these capacities. Some working dog breeds such as German Shepherds or Labrador Retriever are established for hundreds of years. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive forms, resulting in a vast variety of different breeds.  These dogs are intelligent and are capable of assessing situations and acting on their assessments as part of their instinctive traits.

Terrier Group

The lively terrier needs an owner with a similar temperament because this dog is always ready for action.  Examples of some popular terrier breeds include Patterdale Terrier, Irish Terriers, Bull Terrier, Fox Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier.  Bred for hunting and killing vermin, the terrier does not want any other dog or animal competition in the house. If you've other pets, the terrier needs to be integrated into your household carefully so that everyone is happy. Make sure you consult with the breeder before purchasing it.  Also, these energetic dogs have special coat care requirements.

Toy Breeds

These dogs are bred for their fine qualities as companions and are popular because it's easier for the owners to train and care for them as compared to large dogs.  These dogs are valued for their appealing looks and for the love that they provide to their owners.  Examples of toy breeds include the Chihuahua, Maltese, Affenpinscher and Shih Tzu.

Non-Sporting Breeds

Non-sporting dogs are a diverse group. The breeds in the Non-Sporting group are a varied collection in terms of size, coat, personality and overall appearance. Dogs in the Non-Sporting Group include: Chow Chow, Poodle, American Eskimo Dog, Bichon Frise, Finnish Spitz and many others.

Herding Breeds

The term "herding dog" is sometimes erroneously used to describe livestock guardian dogs, whose primary function is to guard flocks from predation and theft. Herding dogs do not guard flocks but move them.  In general terms when categorizing dog breeds, herding dogs are considered a subcategory of working dogs, but for conformation shows they usually form a separate group.  The Beauceron, Canaan dog and the Shetland sheepdog are some members of the herding breed.
